Why Membership?

Frequently asked questions about church membership might include:  Why membership?  Don’t all Christians become members the moment they make Jesus their Savior and Lord?  Why is there a further need to identify with a specific local church?  What is the point of formal membership?

We believe formal membership is healthy for the congregation and each individual member for several reasons.  It’s an expression of commitment to Jesus Christ and to the mission of South Brooke Church.  It is saying, “I believe in where SBCC is going and I am wholeheartedly committed to it and to following it’s leaders.”  The first reason is because it is Biblical.  Though the term doesn’t occur in the scriptures, the concept is implied throughout the New Testament.  Early church believers regularly identified themselves with a specific local body and were challenged to be faithful to its work and administrations.  The second reason is because it helps the leaders of the church to identify who their flock is so they can appropriately administer care and oversight within the body.  A final, and perhaps most important reason, is that it benefits the individual by helping them to move out of the fuzzy realm of good intentions and into the reality of committed participation where they will grow and flourish in Christ.

People are at various places and stages in their spiritual journey when they come to South Brooke.  Some people are spiritually stuck in a rut, while others are hurting.  Some have been burned by legalism while others are riding a spiritual roller coaster because they never developed the spiritual disciplines in their life.  Some are already mature reproducing leaders who need opportunities to use their gifts.  Because people have different needs when they come to South Brooke we will take time during a lunch or coffee to help you identify how we might best minister to you right now, according to where you are in your spiritual journey, life stage, and circumstances of life.  Our goal is to help people where they are to grow in their daily walk with Jesus.

Membership Process

We invite each person interested in membership to meet with one of our ministers.  This special time orients new members to our rich history, core values, and vision for the future.  We will answer many of your questions about being a part of South Brooke Church of Christ.  We also ask each individual adult to complete an Info and Ministry Connection form that will begin to help us in getting to know you.  We hope to have these available online soon.

Whether you’ve been a Christian for years, have just become one, or are thinking about becoming one, our church leadership wants to accept you where you are and lovingly encourage you to grow in your relationship with Christ.  Our ultimate mission at SBCC is “to bring people to Jesus” from the teaching of Jesus in Matthew 28:18-20.  We are honored that you are interested in becoming a part of this church family.
